Quarterback Randall Mackey has earned offensive player of the week honors by the MACJC after piling up 527 yards of total offense during the Lions’ come-from-behind 27-23 road win over No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast last Thursday in Perkinston.
SCOOBA, Miss. – On the heels of East Mississippi Community College’s come-from-behind 27-23 road victory over second-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast last Thursday, Lion freshman quarterback Randall Mackey has been named the MACJC/Region 23 Offensive Player of the Week.

A 2007 PARADE All-American from Bastrop (La.) High School, Mackey amassed 527 yards of total offense and contributed to all four of the team’s touchdowns in EMCC’s dramatic win at Gulf Coast.  In addition to hitting 36-of-58 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns, Mackey picked up 86 yards on the ground in 12 carries, including the game-winning, 3-yard scoring run with 21 seconds remaining.  The 5-foot-11, 190-pound signal-caller had scoring strikes of 31, 29 and 22 yards for the Lions in their win over the defending national co-champions.

In directing coach Buddy Stephens’ troops to a pair of unanswered fourth-quarter touchdowns, Mackey accounted for all 77 yards of total offense during the Lions’ game-winning drive, going 6-of-6 through the air for 58 yards and rushing three times for 19 yards.  His 3-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left capped EMCC’s impressive comeback and halted MGCCC’s 15-game winning streak.

Mackey enters the week ranked second nationally in passing yards per game (273.0) and third in total offense (327.5 yards/game).  Through the first four games of the current campaign, the former three-time, first-team all-state standout has completed 84-of-133 passes (63.2%) for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns, while adding 218 rushing yards on 33 carries (6.6 yards per carry) and three touchdowns.

Mackey becomes the second EMCC player to earn MACJC/Region 23 weekly honors this season, as sophomore strong safety Alex Hill of West Point claimed defensive laurels following his two interceptions during the Lions’ season-opening 28-9 home triumph over Copiah-Lincoln.

After three consecutive road outings, East Mississippi, now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in North Division play, returns home to play two straight contests against divisional foes.  On Thursday (Sept. 25), the Lions play host to Northwest Mississippi Community College beginning at 7 p.m. at Sullivan-Windham Field.  EMCC then welcomes Coahoma CC on Saturday, Oct. 4, as part of Homecoming festivities in Scooba.  Kickoff for the EMCC-Coahoma contest is slated for 2 p.m.
