SCOOBA, Miss. – Freshman Nikeisha Noel recorded her third hat trick of the season to lead the East Mississippi Community College women’s soccer team to a 3-2 home overtime win over Northwest Mississippi CC Wednesday afternoon at the EMCC Soccer Field.  The Lions dropped a 4-1 decision to the Rangers in the nightcap of the North Division twinbill.

Noel provided EMCC’s lone goal of the opening half on an assist from sophomore keeper Lacey Mangrum of Hernando, as the Lady Lions trailed Northwest, 2-1, at the intermission.  Noel tied up the contest at 2-2 with her second goal of the match coming around the 20:00 mark of the second half on an assist by freshman Alex Shelton of West Point.  Four minutes into the 10-minute overtime session, Noel netted the game-winner after receiving another keeper punt by Mangrum, who initiated the winning play by intercepting a Northwest corner kick.

Coupled with last Saturday’s 3-2 non-division triumph over Judson College of Marion, Ala., the EMCC women are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in North Division action.

A member of Trinidad & Tobago’s Under-20 National Team, Noel leads the Lady Lions with 12 goals on the season.  In addition to her three goals against NWCC, she previously notched a hat trick versus Itawamba Community College last week along with a five-goal effort in EMCC’s season-opening victory over East Central CC on Aug. 22.

The Lions, now 0-6-1 overall and 0-4 in division play, gave up two early goals to the Rangers in the opening half to trail, 2-0, at the break.  EMCC’s lone score of the men’s contest came late in the second half on freshman Leonardo Reyes’ third goal of the campaign.

“The women started to relax early in today’s match and allowed Northwest to have some first-half opportunities,” EMCC head soccer coach Junior Noel said.  “To our credit, we picked up the intensity in the second half and allowed them very few scoring chances following halftime.  With our limited numbers on the men’s side, we’re continuing to struggle with putting effective combinations together out there on the field,” Noel continued.

The East Mississippi soccer teams conclude the home portion of their 2008 schedule Friday by playing host to Jones County Junior College.  The 2 p.m. women’s match will be followed by a 4 p.m. men’s contest at the EMCC Soccer Field.
