![]() Sophomore pitcher Brooke Lee tossed a five-hit shutout to help lead the Lady Lion softball team to a 2-0 fall-opening victory over Marion Military Institute in the first game of a doubleheader played Saturday afternoon in Marion, Ala. In the fall opener for both teams, EMCC sophomore Brooke Lee battled MMI’s Caitlin Houk in a pitcher’s duel through five scoreless innings. In the top of the sixth, Lee led off the inning with a single and stole second. Following the first out of the inning, sophomore Josie Matthews delivered her second hit of the game. However, Lee was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Sophomore Regan Shows extended the frame with a base hit, while freshman Linsey Upton of Columbus came through with a clutch two-out double that plated the only runs of the contest. Lee, a product of West Lauderdale High School, went the distance to record the complete-game shutout for EMCC, scattering five hits with two strikeouts and two walks over seven innings of work. Lee received excellent defensive support in the win, as a pair of Lady Tiger runners were thrown out at third base in the contest. In the third with two outs, MMI’s Lauren Lewis was gunned down at third via an Alex Mallette-to-Upton-to-Shows relay after trying to stretch a double into a triple. Three innings later, Lewis was thrown out at third by EMCC catcher Jessica Vick on an attempted steal. The contest ended when MMI pinch-runner (or courtesy runner) Aundrea Parks attempted to steal home when Vick threw the ball back to Lee on the mound. With two outs and a runner also on first base at the time, Lee turned and fired to the plate to nail Parks and seal the 2-0 victory for the Lady Lions. In the nightcap, East Mississippi took an early 2-0 lead in the first by plating a pair of runs on passed balls. However, the homestanding Lady Tigers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. MMI came back to tally two more scores in the second to make it a 4-2 contest. EMCC pulled to within a run in the third on an RBI single by Vick. However, MMI chased Lady Lion starter Courtney Nunn by batting around in the fourth. The Lady Tigers all but sealed a split in the twinbill by scoring five runs on four hits and two EMCC errors. Two more MMI runs in the fifth made it an 11-3 final. The EMCC Lady Lions continue their fall softball slate by heading to Senatobia to take part in a tournament hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College on Saturday, Sept. 20. |
