.jpg) MACJC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year Sharon Thompson will serve as a court coach during this month’s USA Basketball Women’s National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. SCOOBA – On the heels of guiding the East Mississippi Community College women’s basketball program to the national tournament for the first time since 1978, EMCC’s Sharon Thompson has been selected to serve as a court coach during the 2009 USA Basketball Women’s National Team Trials, as announced Friday by USA Basketball.
The trials will be held May 14-17 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Along with Russ Davis of Vanguard University (Calif.), Thompson will work with the approximately 60 athletes who will be vying for spots on the 2009 USA U19 World Championship and USA World University Games squads.
“It is an incredible honor and privilege to be invited to work with such a prestigious organization as USA Basketball,” Thompson said. “I see this as a great learning experience and an opportunity to better myself as a young coach. Working with USA Basketball will be an experience that I will never forget.”
In her fourth season as head coach of the Lady Lions and eighth year overall with the EMCC women’s basketball program, Thompson guided this past year’s club to a 25-7 overall record and 11-1 MACJC North Division mark as divisional champions. In claiming the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament title at Mississippi College in Clinton, the 2008-09 Lady Lions earned one of 16 berths in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship held in Salina, Kan. For her coaching efforts this past season, Thompson collected 2008-09 NJCAA Division I/District O Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year honors as well as being tabbed the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
A native of Geiger, Ala., Thompson starred collegiately at Mississippi State University, earning first-team all-SEC plaudits as a senior in 1997-98. In 2005, she was selected into the SEC Greats Program for her playing contributions at MSU. With a master’s degree in physical education from the University of West Alabama, Thompson played professionally in the American Basketball League and the Italian Basketball League before beginning her coaching career in 2001.
The 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship will take place July 23-August 2 in Bangkok, Thailand. University of Northern Illinois head coach Carol Owens has been named head coach of the 2009 U19 World Championship team, while Amanda Butler of the University of Florida and Bill Fennelly of Iowa State University will serve as assistant coaches.
The women’s basketball competition of the 2009 World University Games will take place July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Arizona State University’s Charli Turner Thorne has been tabbed as head coach of the 2009 World University Games team, with Suzy Merchant of Michigan State University and Pepperdine University’s Julie Rousseau joining her as assistant coaches.

.jpg) Shelby Crawford of Thomasville, Ala., has become the third out-of-state signee to join the EMCC women’s basketball program. SCOOBA – Shelby Crawford of Thomasville (Ala.) High School has become the third out-of-state women’s basketball signee of the current recruiting period for head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions.
A 6-foot-1 forward, Crawford posted team-high averages of 12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game as a senior in helping lead head coach Curtis Lane’s 18-6 Lady Tigers to a regional runner-up finish. She also averaged 2.6 assists and 2.4 steals an outing, while shooting 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the charity stripe. Her single-game highs this past season included 23 points against Jackson and 16 rebounds versus Andalusia.
For her efforts this past year, Crawford was named the team’s most valuable player, in addition to earning Thomasville’s Hustle Award and Rebound Award during the school’s season-ending awards banquet.
A four-year varsity performer at Thomasville, Crawford helped pace the THS Lady Tigers to a composite mark of 51-18 as a three-year starter, including a regular-season area championship during her junior year.
Crawford joins previously announced out-of-state EMCC women’s basketball signees Rickeisha Bryant of Homestead Senior High School in Florida and Malashia Chandler of Atlanta’s Westlake High School in Georgia.
Crawford is the daughter of James and Lisa Crawford of Thomasville. James Crawford, who starred at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. (now University of the Cumberlands) after transferring from Livingston University (now University of West Alabama), enjoyed a productive 18-year professional career in the National Basketball League of Australia. With pro career averages of 22.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest in 504 career games played in Australia, Crawford was a four-time NBL First Team selection and was named to the NBL’s 25th Anniversary Team.

.jpg) Jaqualynn Dae McCarra of Quitman High School recently became the fifth women’s soccer player to sign with the EMCC Lady Lions. SCOOBA – Jaqualynn Dae McCarra of Quitman High School has signed a national letter of intent to play soccer for East Mississippi Community College, as announced by EMCC head soccer coach Junior Noel.
A 5-foot-6 midfielder/forward, McCarra was a second-team all-district performer at Quitman in 2007 and 2006. She also earned most improved player honors for head coach Brian Jordan’s Panthers as a junior in 2007.
Away from the soccer field, McCarra participated as a cheerleader and was a member of the Quitman High School color guard for four years. She has also played the trombone as a school band member since the sixth grade. In addition, McCarra has been involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization at QHS and was a member of the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honors society.
The daughter of Beverly Lewis of Quitman and Jeff Lewis of Meridian, and Joey and Gail McCarra of Quitman, she has three brothers and two sisters along with two nephews and one niece.
McCarra joins previously announced EMCC women’s soccer signees Ebone’ Gaskin and Avraya Sharkey of Greenville-Weston High School, India Whittle of Neshoba Central High School and Nichola Crenshaw of Meridian High School.

.jpg) South Panola’s Skylar Barnes has become the most recent in-state women’s basketball signee for the EMCC Lady Lions. SCOOBA – East Mississippi women’s basketball coach Sharon Thompson has added Skylar Barnes of South Panola High School to EMCC’s list of in-state signees for the current recruiting period.
A 5-foot-11 forward for head coach Ralph Stallings’ Lady Tigers, Barnes averaged around 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals per game in helping lead SPHS to an 18-3 record as a senior. She also shot 69 percent from the free-throw line this past season. Her high-scoring contests in 2008-09 included 20 points against Cleveland and 16-point efforts versus Lafayette and Senatobia.
A three-year varsity starter on the basketball court for South Panola, Barnes is a member of the school’s National Honor Society and will graduate with honors.

.jpg) Nashedra Barry of Columbus High School has become the latest softball signee for head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions. Barry has also signed with the EMCC women’s basketball program. SCOOBA – Nashedra Barry of Columbus High School has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at East Mississippi Community College, as announced Wednesday by EMCC softball coach Kate Neely.
The 6-foot-1 Barry also signed earlier this month to play basketball for head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions.
A right-handed pitcher, Barry earned team MVP and best offensive player honors during her fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball career for Columbus head softball coach Macy Wilbanks.
On the basketball court for head coach Yvonne Hairston’s CHS Lady Falcons, Barry averaged 12 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds per game as a senior forward.
While also excelling as a starting participant on the Columbus softball and basketball teams, Barry has flourished away from the athletic scene as well during her high school days. Along with serving as student body president and being an active member of CHS’s student council, she has been affiliated with the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Beta Club organizations. Barry is also a member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society.
Barry is the daughter of Cynthia Barry of Columbus and the late Billy Barry.
