In the midst of playing four straight softball doubleheaders away from home, the Lady Lions posted a pair of lopsided wins over Coahoma Friday afternoon in Clarksdale.
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The East Mississippi softball team improved to 9-7 in North Division play with a convincing doubleheader road sweep of Coahoma Friday afternoon.  In their third road twin bill over a four-day span, the Lady Lions run-ruled CCC by scores of 16-2 and 18-0.

The day prior, EMCC earned a Thursday doubleheader split at Itawamba by claiming a 7-3 victory in the nightcap after dropping a 3-1 decision in the first game.  In their first of four straight North Division doubleheaders coming away from home, the Lady Lions fell by scores of 9-1 and 12-4 Tuesday at Northeast Mississippi.

In Friday’s opening contest at Coahoma, EMCC’s Regan Shows of Beaumont capped a nine-run third inning by smacking a two-out grand slam.  West Lauderdale product Jessica Vick hit her second home run of the week with a two-run shot in the contest, while also adding a run-scoring double.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Lee, a former West Lauderdale standout, worked all four innings in the opening contest for the Lady Lions, allowing just a fourth-inning single to go along with her six strikeouts and three walks.

In the nightcap, EMCC pushed across five runs in the second followed by seven more in the third to contribute to the lopsided shutout.  Shows, a transfer from Jones County Junior College by way of Perry Central High School, went 2-for-4 in the second game with a two-run double in the first inning and another two-bagger in the fourth.  New Hope product Linsey Upton added a pair of singles in the second contest.

Freshman right-hander Courtney Nunn, of Jonesboro, La., earned the victory in the nightcap, only giving up a pair of fourth-inning singles while striking out five Coahoma hitters and issuing just one base on balls.

Coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions, now 16-20 overall, play their fourth divisional road doubleheader in a week’s span by competing at Mississippi Delta on Monday in a make-up date from an earlier postponement due to inclement weather.  East Mississippi will play host to Itawamba in a Wednesday doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m. on the Scooba campus.

Sophomore forward Angelique Burtts has capped an honor-filled hoops campaign by being named to the 2008-09 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball All-American Third Team.
SCOOBA, Miss. – Angelique Burtts has capped her East Mississippi Community College basketball career by being named to the 2008-09 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball All-American Third Team, as announced this week by the NJCAA office headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo.

A 5-foot-11 forward from Conyers, Ga., Burtts has made the most of her one year on EMCC’s Scooba campus after transferring from Middle Tennessee State University.  The former McDonald’s All-American nominee from Rockdale County High School in Georgia led head coach Sharon Thompson’s 25-7 EMCC Lady Lions in scoring at 15.5 points per game and ranked second in rebounding at 7.9 boards an outing this past season.  In also being selected to the 10-member All-NJCAA Region 23 Team and to the five-player All-MACJC North State First Team, Burtts proved to be a vital member of an East Mississippi club that advanced to the 16-team field of the 2009 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship in Salina, Kan.

In recording a team-high 10 double-doubles on the season, Burtts nearly averaged a double-double (14.3 ppg and 9.5 rpg) in eight postseason tournament games to help pace EMCC to the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament championship as well as to the regular-season title of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division.

A 31-game starter for the Lady Lions as a sophomore, Burtts topped EMCC with 72 steals and 22 made 3-pointers, along with leading the club in free throw accuracy at 70.3 percent for the year.  She also finished second on the team with 70 assists and 19 blocked shots on the season.

With 10 outings of 20 or more points in 2008-09, Burtts tallied a career-high 27 points on 8-of-14 field goals and 10-of-11 charity tosses in EMCC’s home divisional win over Holmes.  She also had 10 games with double-digit rebounds this past year, including a career-most 19 boards – to go along with 24 points on 10-of-14 field goals – in the Lady Lions’ overtime victory at North Division foe Northwest Mississippi.

Burtts will continue her collegiate career playing for head coach Lea Henry at Colonial Athletic Association member Georgia State University in Atlanta.
