The EMCC basketball teams resume MACJC North Division competition by playing host to Northeast Mississippi Tuesday evening on the Scooba campus. A 5:30 p.m. women’s contest will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s game at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.
SCOOBA – In their first home hoops doubleheader action since Dec. 5, the East Mississippi Community College basketball teams play host to Northeast Mississippi Community College Tuesday evening on the Scooba campus.  Following a 5:30 p.m. women’s contest, the EMCC Lions will look to get back into national ranking consideration by taking on the 17th-ranked NEMCC Tigers in the 7:30 p.m. men’s game at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

Coming off consecutive NJCAA Region 23 championships and back-to-back NJCAA National Tournament appearances, head coach Mark White’s EMCC men’s squad was ranked seventh in this year’s preseason NJCAA Top 20 poll.  Following tough November road losses to Northwest Florida State College and Shelton State CC, currently ranked No. 1 and No. 18, respectively, in the national poll, the Lions have bounced back to win six straight contests.

Collectively 24-2 in divisional play dating back to the 2009-10 campaign, the two-time reigning MACJC North Division champions are 2-0 within the division this season with a 69-58 road victory over Holmes and a 95-67 home triumph over Northwest Mississippi during the first week of December.  Most recently, the 9-2 EMCC Lions claimed double-digit road wins over rivals East Central (86-61) and Meridian (75-65) last week.

Averaging 85.9 points per game as a team, the EMCC men are defeating their opposition by an average margin of 24.2 points per contest with all nine victories coming by double figures.  Defensively, the Lions are limiting their opponents to an average of only 61.7 points per outing.

With six different players averaging between 17 and seven points per game on the year, the East Mississippi men’s team is led in scoring by the sophomore tandem of D.J. Evans at the point position and Colin Borchert from his forward spot.  Evans, from Brandon, leads the Lions in scoring (17.2 ppg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (1.8 spg).  The former Jackson All-Metro selection by The Clarion-Ledger newspaper is coming off a season-best, 29-point effort in last Thursday’s victory at Meridian CC.

Borchert, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound transfer from Yavapai College (Ariz.), is EMCC’s second-leading scorer (16.5 ppg) and No. 2 rebounder (7.8 rpg) on the year.  In addition to shooting 52 percent from the field, including 18-of-45 (40%) from beyond the arc, and 77 percent from the charity stripe, the Arizona native leads the Lions with 17 blocked shots and ranks second on the club with 21 assists and 15 steals.

With two MACJC North Division regular-season titles over the past three years, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions are currently 4-8 overall and 1-1 in division action on the season.  Having most recently split a pair of games on the road last week by beating East Central (67-61) and falling to Meridian (59-54), the East Mississippi women opened division play back in December by dropping a 79-78, double-overtime decision at Holmes and then rebounding with a 71-56 home triumph over Northwest Mississippi.

Along with half of their season setbacks having come against teams presently ranked in the NJCAA Top 20 women’s poll – No. 2 Northwest Florida State, No. 5 Pensacola State and two losses to 13th-ranked Shelton State – six of the Lady Lions’ eight losses on the year have been by seven points or less.

The EMCC women are led by the sophomore backcourt duo of Chadisty Hickman and Alvida Clemons, who are averaging 13.9 and 11.7 points per game, respectively, through the first dozen contests.  Hickman, a former Kemper County High School standout, also paces the Lady Lions in assists (3.8 apg) and steals (1.7 spg) while also averaging 5.3 rebounds an outing on the year.

Having thus far played the same MACJC North Division competition as the EMCC teams this season, the 5-7 Northeast Mississippi women have also beaten Northwest Mississippi (74-64) but fallen to Holmes (66-61).  Ranked 17th nationally in last week’s NJCAA Top 20 poll, the 10-1 NEMCC Tigers managed a 102-95, triple-overtime road win over Northwest but followed with a 74-50 home setback to Holmes during the first week of December.

EMCC Lions prevail 75-65 at Meridian; Lady Lions fall 59-54 to MCC in Thursday road hoops action Print E-mail
MERIDIAN – D.J. Evans’ season-high 29 points sparked East Mississippi Community College to a 75-65 road victory over rival Meridian Community College Thursday night at Graham Gymnasium.  In the women’s contest, the MCC Lady Eagles held on for a 59-54 win over the visiting EMCC Lady Lions.

In the nightcap, the visitors battled from behind most of the opening half before scoring 11 unanswered points to take their first lead (23-22) of the game with four minutes remaining in the half.  After trailing 22-17 with 6:37 left until the break, the Lions outscored Meridian 15-5 the rest of the half to take a 32-27 halftime lead.

The Lions maintained the momentum by scoring the first 10 points of the second stanza to move ahead by 15 points (42-27) following a driving dunk by sophomore post player Millaun Brown.  The home-standing Eagles rallied from that point and evened the score at 54-54 by the 7:25 mark.  The score was tied again at 61-all just under the four-minute mark before the combined efforts of Brown and Evans helped enable the visitors to pull away over the final couple of minutes.

Scoring all 13 of his points after intermission on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, Brown scored on consecutive offensive put-backs off Evans’ missed drives to the basket to put EMCC on top 68-62 with less than two minutes remaining.  With Meridian forced to foul down the stretch, Evans converted on 7-of-8 charity tosses over the final 1:59 to give him 18 second-half points.

Improving to 9-2 on the year with their sixth consecutive victory, head coach Mark White’s EMCC Lions also received a season-most 16 points, including 14 in the opening half, from sophomore Tradarrius McPhearson.  Both of EMCC’s losses this season – Northwest Florida State and Shelton State – have come on the road to teams that are currently ranked No. 1 and No. 18, respectively, in the NJCAA Top 20 poll.

Falling to 4-10 on the year, Meridian was led by Kevin Williams’ 21 points.

In women’s action Thursday on the Meridian CC campus, the visiting Lady Lions played from behind virtually the entire contest.  After trailing 28-19 at the halftime break, the EMCC women cut into the deficit during the second stanza but couldn’t get through the five-point barrier for much of the half.

The contest ultimately came down to the final couple of minutes when EMCC sophomore guard Chadisty Hickman nearly single-handedly put the visitors in position to contend for a possible come-from-behind win.  The reigning all-region performer out of Kemper County High School pulled the Lady Lions to within a basket on two different occasions down the stretch.  With all of her team-high 13 points coming in the second half, Hickman’s driving bank shot with 14.6 ticks left on the game clock trimmed the MCC lead to 56-54.

Following an EMCC timeout, sophomore Norianna Haynes, hobbled by an apparent left shin injury, was fouled on the ensuing Meridian possession and courageously sank a pair of free throws to again make it a two-possession contest and essentially seal the game for the Lady Eagles.

Head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions dropped to 4-8 with the setback.  With Hickman as the lone EMCC scorer in double figures, freshman guard Rachel Adams added a spark with nine points off the bench.

Raising their mark to 7-8 on the campaign, the Meridian women were led by Gelese Lampton’s game-high 17 points, followed by Haynes’ dozen tallies.

Both defending MACJC North Division champions, the East Mississippi Community College basketball teams resume division play next Tuesday (Jan. 17) by playing host to Northeast Mississippi Community College on the Scooba campus.  A 5:30 p.m. women’s game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

EMCC head football coach Buddy Stephens was recognized at this week’s American Football Coaches Association Convention, held Jan. 8-11 in San Antonio, Texas, as the 2011 American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year after guiding the Lions to a school-first NJCAA National Championship.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Head coach Buddy Stephens of the NJCAA National Champion Lions of East Mississippi Community College was one of six coaches recognized at this week’s American Football Coaches Association Convention held in San Antonio, Texas.  National Coach of the Year honors were given in all five four-year college divisions plus the junior college level during the AFCA’s Coach of the Year Dinner held this past Tuesday.

In guiding the undefeated EMCC Lions to a school-first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Football Championship this past season, Stephens was the recipient of the 2011 American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year award, as voted on by members of the ACCFCA.  Stephens, a native of Huntsville, Ala., also earned NJCAA Region 23 and Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division Coach of the Year honors after directing the 2011 Lions to their second MACJC State/NJCAA Region 23 Championship in three years and a third division crown within a four-year span.

As selected by a vote of the active members within the American Football Coaches Association’s five divisions, the AFCA National Coach of the Year winners among four-year schools were LSU’s Les Miles (Football Bowl Subdivision), Willie Fritz of Sam Houston State University (Football Championship Subdivision), Wayne State (Mich.) University’s Paul Winters (Division II), Lance Leipold of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (Division III), and Saint Xavier University’s Mike Feminis (NAIA).

The AFCA Coach of the Year award is the oldest and most prestigious of all the Coach of the Year awards and is the only one chosen exclusively by the coaches themselves.

The AFCA Convention annually attracts coaches from all levels of the football coaching profession.  With approximately 6,000 coaches in attendance at this week’s four-day convention held in San Antonio, the yearly meetings and coaching clinics served as the culmination of the 2011 college football season.

DECATUR – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams completed their regular-season series sweep of East Central by claiming a pair of road triumphs over the home-standing Warriors Tuesday evening at the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building on the ECCC campus.  The Lady Lions opened the night with a 67-61 win over the ECCC women, while the EMCC Lions capped the evening with an easy 86-61 victory in the men’s contest.

Back in November on the Scooba campus, the EMCC squads swept the visiting Warriors by scores of 77-72 in overtime in the women’s game and 86-54 in the men’s contest.

In Tuesday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC women upped their 13-point (41-28) halftime cushion to 18 points before the Lady Warriors took a brief one-point lead.  Led the backcourt play of sophomores Chadisty Hickman and Alvida Clemons, the Lady Lions showed poise and regrouped to reclaim the advantage and finish with the six-point victory.  Hickman and Clemons led the way with 19 and 17 points, respectively, for the winners, who improved to 4-7 on the season.

Remaining winless in 11 attempts on the year, the Lady Warriors received a game-high 22 points plus 10 rebounds from Ja’Monica Orton.   Kelcia Bufkin added 15 points for East Central.

In the nightcap, head coach Mark White’s EMCC Lions also lengthened a double-digit halftime advantage (44-33) en route to cruising to the 25-point road victory.  The win marked the Lions’ ninth straight series triumph over East Central dating back to the 2008-09 campaign, including four wins over the Warriors last season.

Improving to 8-2 on the season, EMCC had five players score in double figures, led by sophomores Colin Borchert, D.J. Evans and Deon Bedford all with 16 points apiece.  Borchert and Bedford each registered double-doubles with 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.  Fellow sophomores Curtis Hall and Tradarrius McPhearson added 11 points apiece for the winners.

Now also winless in 11 games this season, East Central was led by Cordarion Nichols’ 15 points.

As part of JUCO Weekly’s ‘Game of the Week’ basketball coverage, game highlights and post-game interviews from Tuesday’s hoops doubleheader in Decatur will be available online at www.jucoweekly.org.
