Monday's EMCC-Delta hoops DH postponed until Saturday afternoon due to wintry weather forecast Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Due to the forecast of continued wintry weather to begin the work week for a widespread area of Mississippi, Monday night’s scheduled basketball doubleheader between home-standing East Mississippi Community College and visiting Mississippi Delta Community College has been postponed.

The MACJC North Division hoops twin bill between EMCC and MDCC has been re-scheduled for this Saturday (Jan. 19) afternoon on the Scooba campus.  A 2 p.m. women’s game will be followed by a 4 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

With the postponed start to this week’s hoops schedule, the EMCC basketball teams will now turn their immediate attention to Thursday’s road doubleheader against division foe Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.  Tip-off times at NEMCC’s Bonner Arnold Coliseum are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

All EMCC basketball games this week and throughout the 2012-13 season are slated to be video-streamed live on the school’s Ustream channel at www.ustream.tv/channel/emcc-basketball, which can be easily accessed through the school’s newly launched athletics website, www.EMCCAthletics.com.

Short-handed Lions hold on for 67-63 win at Meridian; Lady Lions falter in 48-44 OT loss to MCC Print E-mail

MERIDIAN – The visiting East Mississippi Community College basketball teams battled rival Meridian Community College to a pair of four-point decisions Thursday night at Graham Gymnasium on the MCC campus.  In the nightcap, the short-handed EMCC Lions held on for a 67-63 victory, while the Lady Lions surrendered a 12-point, second-half lead to fall 48-44 in overtime to the home-standing Lady Eagles.

Coach Mark White’s gutsy EMCC Lions, improving to 8-4 on the year, had to play their second game of the week with only six available players because of seven players having to sit out their second and final outing of a two-game suspension.  Just two days prior in Scooba, the undermanned EMCC men breezed to a 91-75 home triumph over the rival Warriors of East Central Community College.  The unfortunate player suspensions, which involved the team’s leading scorer and rebounder on the year in Jarekious Bradley, No. 3 team scorer Micah Walker and starting point guard Nick Giles, were the result of a minor on-court altercation during EMCC’s third and final game of the post-Christmas Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout against host Mesa (AZ) CC in which the seven penalized Lion players were ejected and subsequently suspended for this week’s East Central and Meridian games for leaving the team bench.

Still feeling the after-effects of Tuesday night’s fast-paced effort against East Central, the resilient Lions scored 16 unanswered points to erase an early 5-1 deficit versus Meridian.  With freshman Mack Foster hitting his first three attempts from beyond the three-point arc, the visitors mounted a 25-9 advantage 11 minutes into the contest.  The Eagles managed to trim the margin to single digits (31-22) late in the half, but Foster’s fourth 3-pointer of the first 20 minutes of play staked the Lions to a 37-24 halftime lead.

Scoring the first six points of the second half on back-to-back inside buckets by Earnest Hunter and a jumper by Foster, EMCC’s lead grew to a game-high 19 points (43-24) a few minutes into the second stanza.  The Lions’ double-digit lead stayed solid for the first 12 minutes of the second half, before the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points to cut the deficit to 55-52 with 6:15 left in regulation.  Coming off Tuesday’s season-high, 35-point outburst against East Central, freshman guard Jacolby Mobley picked a key moment to score his first points of the night on a 3-pointer to temporarily stem Meridian’s rally.  Following five straight MCC points to make it a one-point contest (58-57), Mobley came up big once again with a three-point play the hard way by driving to the basket at the 3:42 mark.

Clinging to their precarious lead with the balance of the game on the line, the short-handed Lions solidified their second victory in three nights defensively with key blocked shots down the stretch by Hunter and Mobley.  Sandwiched between those blocks, a sixth 3-pointer (in seven attempts) by Foster with two minutes remaining also helped put the finishing touches on the hard-fought contest.

Foster, a freshman guard from West Bolivar High School, finished with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field to set a season high for the second straight game after scoring 19 points versus East Central.  Hunter, who had 13 points earlier in the week, also bested his career-high scoring mark for the second consecutive game with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Meridian.  The former Noxubee County product also matched Foster with a team-high eight rebounds to go along with his four blocks, four steals and three assists on the night.

Remaining winless in 17 attempts on the year, Meridian was led by Kenny Davis’ 22 points.

In the low-scoring women’s contest, the Lady Lions scratched out a 19-17 halftime edge as both teams struggled from the field and were slowed by frequent turnovers.  The EMCC women came out of the break strong with an 11-3 run to take a 30-20 lead with 14:30 remaining in regulation.

After the visitors bumped up the margin to a dozen points (36-24) with seven minutes left in regulation, the Meridian women scored seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to 36-31.  With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, the Lady Lions seemed to still be in control by scoring the next basket on an inside bucket by Savannah Kimmons.  However, EMCC was hampered by four critical miscues down the stretch, and the Lady Eagles scored the final seven points of regulation to tie the game at 38-38 heading into a decisive extra session.

Keyed by a three-point play by Charmane Tims, the EMCC women grabbed a 44-42 lead with just under two minutes remaining in overtime.  As was the case at the end of regulation, the Lady Lions would not be able to score again and were victimized by four more turnovers over the final 1:25 to seal their own fate.  With 31 turnovers for the game, 21 of those miscues came after halftime.

Now 2-10 overall on the year, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC Lady Lions were led by Tims’ 12 points.  Quitman’s Dajah McCarty followed with 10 points, while freshmen Takera Mitchell and Kimmons followed with eight points apiece.

Improving to 11-5 on the year, the Lady Eagles were powered by Gelese Lampton’s game-high 27 points.

Now finished with non-divisional opponents for the regular season, the East Mississippi basketball teams resume MACJC North Division action Monday night (Jan. 14) by playing to host to Mississippi Delta Community College.  Game times are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.  Both games will be video-streamed live on EMCC’s Ustream channel at www.ustream.tv/channel/emcc-basketball.

EMCC women snap skid with 67-60 win over East Central; Lions complete home sweep with 91-75 victory Print E-mail
SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams tipped off the new calendar year by sweeping visiting East Central Community College Tuesday night at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.  The home-standing EMCC Lady Lions snapped an eight-game losing skid with a 67-60 triumph over the Lady Warriors, while the short-handed Lions breezed to a 91-75 victory over the winless ECCC men in the nightcap.

In the women’s contest, head coach Sharon Thompson’s EMCC women overcame a 36-27 halftime deficit and outscored East Central 40-24 in the second half to pick up their first victory since Nov. 3.  The Lady Lions trailed the entire first half, going down by 11 points a couple of times midway through the half.  After EMCC trimmed the margin to two points (24-22) on a Janay Townsel 3-pointer with around four minutes left until the break, the visitors outscored the Lady Lions 12-5 the rest of the half to take the nine-point halftime advantage.

The EMCC women came out hot from the field in the second stanza, taking their first lead of the contest (40-39) on a Takera Mitchell 3-pointer seven minutes into the half.  After Xzandra Dowd’s trey briefly reclaimed the lead (45-42) for the visitors at the 11:00 mark, the Lady Lions scored 10 unanswered points to move ahead 52-45 with 7:30 remaining in regulation.

The Lady Warriors initially cut the deficit to four points with three subsequent free throws over the next minute of play. However, they would not get any closer than five points for the remaining six minutes, as the EMCC women would go on to claim their second victory of the campaign.

Improving their field-goal shooting from 31 percent over the game’s first 20 minutes to 47 percent in the second half, the 2-9 Lady Lions featured very balanced scoring on the night.  Freshman guard Nockeyia Qualls, of Forest, led the way with a season-high 14 points, followed by Quitman’s Dajah McCarty and Mitchell, of Wayne County, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  West Point’s Wilma Davis and Leah Isabelle, of Pass Christian, each added nine points for the winners.

Falling to 4-8 on the year, the Lady Warriors received a game-high 18 points from Jakela Johnson, while Dowd added a dozen points for the visitors.

Coming off a fourth-place team finish in the post-Christmas Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout in Mesa, Ariz., in which they had seven players ejected from their third and final game of the tourney against host Mesa for leaving the team bench during a minor on-court altercation, head coach Mark White’s troops had to forge through the East Central game with only six available players.  Those seven missing players, including leading scorer and rebounder Jarekious Bradley, No. 3 team scorer Micah Walker and starting point guard Nick Giles, were serving the initial outing of their two-game suspension, which will also include Thursday’s matchup at rival Meridian Community College.

Despite being undermanned, the home-standing Lions managed to grab a double-digit lead (21-11) eight minutes into the contest.  Following a 3-pointer by East Central’s Chris Rhoney, EMCC freshman guard Jacolby Mobley scored the game’s next nine points to make it a 30-14 contest midway through the opening half.  The Lions’ cushion ballooned to as many as 24 points on a Trey Brown driving baseline dunk before settling with a comfortable 53-30 halftime spread.

EMCC’s lead pretty much stayed around the 20-point margin for the majority of the second half.  Only a pair of 3-pointers by East Central’s Rhoney and Walter Evans in the waning moments of the contest kept the game from being a 20-point affair.

Battling cramps toward the end of the game, Mobley, a former Starkville High School product, finished with a season-high 35 points and eight assists for the 7-4 Lions.  Fellow freshman Mack Foster, of West Bolivar High School, also reached a season best with 19 points, while sophomores Trey Brown, of Brandon, and Noxubee County’s Earnest Hunter followed with 13 points apiece.

Dropping their 12th decision of the season in as many outings, the visiting Warriors were led by Rhoney’s 23 points.  Jamere Eichelberger and Aquill Baynard followed with 12 points each.

The 16-point triumph by the Lions marked their 11th consecutive series win over East Central, including an 82-72 road win over the Warriors a month ago, dating back to the 2008-09 campaign.

The East Mississippi basketball teams hit the road to take on rival Meridian Community College Thursday evening.  A 6 p.m. women’s game will be followed by an 8 p.m. men’s contest at MCC’s Graham Gymnasium.  Both games are slated to be video-streamed live on EMCC’s Ustream channel at www.ustream.tv/channel/emcc-basketball, which can be easily accessed through the school’s newly launched athletics website, www.EMCCAthletics.com.

EMCC basketball teams to host East Central Tuesday before traveling to Meridian for Thursday DH Print E-mail
ImageSCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams tip off the new calendar year by taking on a pair of rival schools this week.  EMCC opens the week by playing host to East Central Community College Tuesday evening on the Scooba campus.  A 5:30 p.m. women’s game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

On Thursday, the EMCC squads will travel to Meridian for a 6/8 p.m. men’s/women’s hoops doubleheader against Meridian Community College to be played at Graham Gymnasium on the MCC campus.

This week’s rivalry games will be rematches of prior head-to-head battles played last semester.  In fact, the East Central women were the Lady Lions’ most recent hardwood opponent, as the Lady Warriors claimed a 49-41 home victory over visiting EMCC a month ago (Dec. 6) in Decatur.  In the men’s contest played last month on East Central’s campus, the Lions posted an 82-72 road triumph over the Warriors.

In his sixth season as the EMCC men’s basketball coach, Mark White owns an 11-2 career mark against East Central, including a current 10-game series winning streak against the Warriors.  Eighth-year EMCC women’s coach Sharon Thompson is 5-10 all-time versus East Central dating back to 2005-06, though those five series wins over the Lady Warriors have come during the last nine head-to-head meetings since 2008-09.

This season, the EMCC Lions are 6-4 overall, including a 64-58 win at Holmes Community College in their Nov. 29 division opener, after most recently collecting fourth-place team honors at the prestigious Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout, hosted by Mesa Community College just after Christmas in Mesa, Ariz.  After tipping off the three-day tournament (Dec. 28-30) with a 73-59 victory over 18th-ranked Central Arizona College, EMCC subsequently dropped close decisions to eventual tourney champion Salt Lake CC (68-61) and host Mesa CC (84-81) on successive days.

Idle from game competition for the past month, EMCC’s Lady Lions are 1-9 overall and will be attempting to snap an eight-game losing skid.  Their lone victory of the current season to date was a 50-48 double-overtime win over San Jacinto College back on Nov. 3 in Baton Rouge, La.

Fans not able to attend EMCC’s basketball games in person this season can follow the Lions and Lady Lions through video-streamed broadcasts available on the school’s Ustream channel at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/emcc-basketball.  EMCC media director/athletic video coordinator Derek Cody provides the play-by-play during EMCC’s video-streamed basketball broadcasts.  Fans are also able to follow East Mississippi Community College Athletics through the school’s newly launched athletics website - www.EMCCAthletics.com – as well as via EMCC’s Facebook (EMCCAthletics) and Twitter (@EMCCAthletics) pages and on YouTube (EMCCAthletics).
