Head coach Mark White’s 26-5 EMCC Lions are the District 15 representatives in the upcoming NJCAA Tournament after claiming the Region 23 Tournament title last week on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton. Rebounding from a 61-58 loss to 25th-ranked Pearl River in the championship game of the EMCC-hosted MACJC State Basketball Tournament, the 12th-ranked Lions knocked off Northeast Mississippi (86-79), Hinds (81-74 in OT) and Itawamba (78-64) on successive nights to capture the regional title. Positioned midway between Wilmington, N.C., and North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Brunswick Community College is located in Supply, N.C. Members of the Carolinas Junior College Conference, the BCC Dolphins punched their ticket to next week’s NJCAA Tournament by posting a 78-72 victory over Clinton Junior College (SC) in the championship game of the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament played this past weekend in Charlotte, N.C. Guided by head coach Walter Shaw, Brunswick owns an overall record of 23-10.
A 20-year coaching veteran, EMCC’s White will be making his third visit to Hutchinson for the men’s national tournament, though this year will mark his first duty as a head coach. He previously served as an assistant coach on North Idaho College’s team that placed fourth in the 1997 tournament, while also accompanying the Wabash Valley College (Ill.) club that went 1-2 in Kansas in 1993. A native of Russellville, Ky., White also was a part of Mississippi State teams that made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT semifinal-round showing during his five-year (2003-07) coaching stint with the Bulldogs.

SCOOBA – East Mississippi sophomore standouts CoCo Ware and Martika Hull have been named to their respective 2009-10 NJCAA All-Region 23 basketball teams, as voted on by the head coaches of the community colleges located in the states of Mississippi and Louisiana.
A repeat all-region performer, Ware leads head coach Mark White’s NJCAA Tournament-bound EMCC Lions in scoring (20.2 ppg) and steals (2.7 spg), along with ranking as the team’s No. 2 rebounder (6.1 rpg) and second-leading playmaker (2.3 apg) on the year. Named to this year’s Preseason NJCAA All-American Second Team, Ware is also a repeat selection to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-North State First Team. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound backcourt performer has eclipsed the 30-point mark five times this season. Most recently, Ware was chosen to last week’s NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament squad after scoring 80 total points over three games (26.7 ppg) to help lead the 26-5 and 12th-ranked EMCC Lions to the school’s first-ever appearance in next week’s (March 16-20) NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kan.

Joining Ware on this year’s MACJC All-North State First Team is EMCC freshman guard Deonte Alexander by way of Nashville’s Glencliff High School. In addition, Alexander is averaging 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest, while also sharing the club lead with 54 made three-point shots for the year. He also accompanied Ware on last week’s NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament club after scoring 17 points on 4-of-5 three-point accuracy in EMCC’s 78-64 win over Itawamba in Thursday’s championship game.
For the women, EMCC’s Martika Hull is a first-time recipient of the 10-member NJCAA All-Region 23 team honor. Last week in Clinton, Hull was tabbed to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament team after averaging 18.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in her two regional outings.

SCOOBA – A late first-game rally fell short for the home-standing East Mississippi softball team, as the Lady Lions went on to drop 4-2 and 5-0 decisions to Southwest Mississippi Saturday afternoon the Scooba campus.
The story for the Lady Lions in Saturday’s opening game was their inability to get timely hits with runners on base. As the Lady Bears were notching solo runs in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings off EMCC sophomore Courtney Nunn, the Lady Lions left the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings.
After Southwest took a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh, EMCC was finally able to break the ice in its half of the final frame. Sophomore outfielder Portia Randle of Starkville led off the seventh with her third hit of the contest. With one out, freshmen Celeste Fontenot and Mallory Pace followed with singles to load the bases for the third time in four innings. Cayla Coleman flied to center field for the second out, but Columbus’ Nashedra Barry singled to right to score two runs after right fielder Roxanne Lock couldn’t corral the base hit cleanly. However, Nunn struck out looking to end the rally and close out the opening contest.
Making her EMCC softball playing debut after completing her freshman basketball season last week for head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions, Barry went 2-for-4 at the plate in her first outing Fontenot, from Baton Rouge, La., also had a pair of singles in the opener. As a team, the EMCC women banged out 11 hits in the first game, but stranded 11 runners on base, including six in scoring position.
In Saturday’s nightcap, the visitors took another 4-0 lead with an unearned run in the third inning and three more tallies in the fourth. With only one hit through the first four innings, EMCC tried to get on the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth frames with a pair of base runners both innings. As was the case for the most part in the opener, the Lady Lions couldn’t get anyone to cross the plate despite moving runners to third base both innings.
As a team, the Lady Lions could only manage four singles in the second game. Coleman, a former Clarkdale High School standout, had a pair of singles, while former New Hope product DeShuni Sanders and Fontenot each had solo safeties.
Nunn, a sophomore from Jonesboro, La., took both losses on the mound for East Mississippi. In the opener, the right-hander scattered seven hits, while striking out nine and allowing just one walk. She went the distance again in the nightcap, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, along with totaling eight strikeouts and issuing three bases on balls.
Head coach Kate Neely’s 2-19 EMCC Lady Lions begin MACJC North Division action Wednesday (March 10) by playing host to Northeast Mississippi in a home doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m. on the Scooba campus.
