In raising the total to 26 players from EMCC’s 2009 state championship football team to sign with four-year schools, Lion standouts (L-R) Randall Mackey (Mississippi), Lance Lewis (East Carolina), Derrick Steele (Central Arkansas), Quartney Cox (UAB) and Billy Autrey (UAB) all inked national letters-of-intent this past week on the Scooba campus.
SCOOBA – Headlined by NJCAA All-American Randall Mackey and fellow SEC signee Brandon Lewis, the defending MACJC state football champions of East Mississippi Community College had a total of 26 players sign with four-year schools either in December or this past week.

A two-time NJCAA Region 23 Offensive MVP for head coach Buddy Stephens’ EMCC Lions, Mackey signed with the University of Mississippi on National Signing Day this past week.  The 6-foot, 185-pound standout quarterback completed his two-year career in Scooba having thrown for 5,940 yards and 56 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 1,065 career yards and nine scores.

Lewis, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive lineman from Birmingham’s Pleasant Grove High School, inked mid-semester with the reigning National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide.  A two-year starter at East Mississippi, Lewis helped lead the resurgent Lions to a two-year composite record of 19-3 and school-first, back-to-back state playoff appearances.

Most recently, wide receiver Lance Lewis, of Concord, N.C., joined former EMCC teammate Diavalo Simpson at East Carolina University.  Also this past week, offensive linemen Quartney Cox of West Point and Columbus’ Billy Autrey signed with the UAB Blazers, joining mid-semester signees Pat Shed of Starkville and T.J. Ballou, a former Northeast Lauderdale standout, in Birmingham.

Also signing this week off EMCC’s 11-1 and fourth-ranked 2009 squad was wide receiver Derrick Steele of Utica, who will reunite with former Lion defensive end Jermayne Lett at the University of Central Arkansas.

Short-handed EMCC women drop 73-63 overtime decision to Wallace State-Hanceville Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Playing without their injured top-two leading scorers on the year, the East Mississippi women’s basketball team dropped a 73-63 home overtime decision to Wallace State-Hanceville Saturday afternoon at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.

Despite being without the services of sophomore forward Martika Hull and freshman playmaker Natalie Tate – both double-figure scorers for the EMCC women – the home-standing Lady Lions had a chance to claim the victory at the end of regulation when sophomore guard Raona Stowers banked in a running jumper in the lane to put EMCC on top 55-53 with 4.8 seconds left in regulation.  However, Wallace State’s Bailee Robinson knotted the score at the buzzer with a driving lay-in basket of her own.

In a contest featuring 10 ties and eight lead changes, the visitors from Hanceville took control of the overtime session with a pair of 3-pointers by Morgan Duncan and another trey by Lauren Grisham.  EMCC cut the overtime deficit to five points (67-62) on a 3-pointer by Eryn Gray with 1:33 remaining, but Wallace State sealed the 10-point road triumph by hitting 6-of-8 charity tosses over the final minute of overtime.

After leading by as many as seven points in the opening half, East Mississippi maintained a 24-20 halftime advantage.  The EMCC women stretched the margin back out to seven points (35-28) five minutes into the second stanza on a Gray 3-pointer and a put-back basket by freshman post player RoTasha Windom.  Hitting 7-of-20 from beyond the three-point arc on the afternoon, Wallace State responded with 10 unanswered points, including a pair of triples by NaKeesha Wise to give the visitors a 38-35 lead.

Five ensuing deadlocks followed the 10-0 Wallace State run midway through the second half to set up the dramatic finish to regulation and subsequent overtime period.

A sophomore guard from Columbus High School, Gray scored 19 of her career-high 21 points in the second half for EMCC, including four 3-pointers coming after the intermission.  Earning her first collegiate start for the Lady Lions, Windom, a former Kemper County High School standout, stepped up to register a double-double with season-best totals of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Wise led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Wallace State-Hanceville with 18 points, followed by 11 points apiece from Jamie Lack and Julia Tupper.  Robinson added 10 points and seven assists for the winners.

Head coach Sharon Thompson’s 11-11 EMCC Lady Lions will join Mark White’s 14th-ranked and 19-3 EMCC men’s squad by playing host to Mississippi Delta in an MACJC North Division doubleheader on Thursday (Feb. 11).  Game times at Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Currently ranked as the state’s No. 6 golfer in the Mississippi Junior Golf Association standings, Wallace was selected to the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) All-State Second Team during his sophomore and junior seasons at Northwest Rankin High School.  He was also the winner of the 2005 Mutual of Omaha’s Drive, Chip and Putt Competition for the state of Mississippi, finishing first in the state in each event for 13 and 14 year olds to advance to the national semifinals held in Shreveport, La.

Wallace helped lead Northwest Rankin to a runner-up finish in the 2008 Class 5A State Golf Championships.  At 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds, Wallace was also a member of NWR’s football team the past two years, starting as a wide receiver and holding on placekicks during the Cougars’ 2009 state playoff season.

No. 14 EMCC Lions claim 83-61 win at Itawamba; Lady Lions fall Print E-mail
FULTON – The 14th-ranked East Mississippi Lions moved another step closer to clinching a school-first men’s MACJC North Division basketball title by posting a convincing 83-61 road win over Itawamba Thursday night at the Davis Event Center.  In the opener, the ICC women claimed a hard-fought 57-53 victory over the visiting EMCC Lady Lions.

In registering their 11th victory in the last dozen outings, head coach Mark White’s Lions raised their overall record to 19-3, including a division-best 8-1 league mark.  With a three-game lead and three division games remaining, EMCC needs one more league victory to reach the 20-win mark on the year and secure the first-ever North Division regular-season championship for the school’s men’s basketball program since the Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges went to divisional play in 1970.

Coupled with their 54-51 home triumph over Itawamba last month in Scooba, the Lions notched their second straight season series sweep over the Indians.  Ranked among the national leaders in team scoring defense, the EMCC men own an impressive +20 points-per-game scoring margin over their opposition dating back to December.

In Thursday’s nightcap, the EMCC men scored the game’s first 10 points and stretched their advantage to 18 points (33-15) with seven minutes remaining in the opening half.  The Lions’ 43-32 halftime lead was trimmed to five points (47-42) seven minutes into the second half, but the Lions’ backcourt tandem of CoCo Ware and Deonte Alexander proved to be too much for the home-standing Indians down the stretch.

Alexander, a freshman playmaker from Nashville, and Ware, a preseason NJCAA All-American, tallied 26 and 25 points, respectively, in making six 3-pointers apiece on the night.  Entering the contest averaging 23 points over his last 11 games, Ware moved closer to the coveted 1,000-point mark and now has 972 career collegiate points to his credit.  Freshman Donovan Walker, of Meridian, added 11 points for the winners.

Falling to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in division play, Itawamba was led by Wesley McIntosh’s 17 points.

In Thursday’s opener, the Itawamba women battled through 10 lead changes and seven ties to finally put away a stubborn EMCC club with six unanswered points during crunch time.  After Martika Hull gave the visitors a short-lived 51-49 lead with 2:36 left, the Lady Indians connected on three straight baskets to account for their four-point victory.

Hull, a reigning MACJC All-North State standout, finished with a team-high 12 points, followed by Natalie Tate’s 10 points for head coach Sharon Thompson’s 11-10 Lady Lions.  The EMCC women fall to 5-4 in division action.

Improving to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in league play, the ICC women were paced by Lori Crudup’s game-high 22 points, including 14 first-half points that helped stake the Lady Indians to a 29-24 halftime advantage.

The EMCC women will step out of division play by playing host to Wallace State-Hanceville Saturday afternoon on the Scooba campus.  Tip-off at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.  The East Mississippi basketball teams resume North Division competition next Thursday (Feb. 11) by welcoming Mississippi Delta to the Scooba campus.  Doubleheader action will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Currie Coliseum.

EMCC Lions jump eight spots to No. 14 nationally in NJCAA men's hoops poll Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Winners of 10 of their last 11 decisions, the EMCC Lions have moved up eight notches to No. 14 nationally in this week’s NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Top 25 poll.

Coach Mark White’s 18-3 Lions currently own a two-game lead over second-place Itawamba and Northeast Mississippi in the MACJC’s North Division standings with a 7-1 league mark.  The only blemish on EMCC’s ledger dating back to December was a 64-61 setback at Mississippi Delta two weeks ago.

Owners of a current four-game winning streak, the Lions head to Fulton to take on defending North Division champion Itawamba on Thursday.  Basketball action at ICC’s Davis Event Center is set to commence at 6 p.m. with the women’s contest, followed by men’s action beginning at 8 p.m.
